Body found in Nevada County identified as that of missing miner

stever.jpgThe Nevada County Sheriff's Department has confirmed that the body found by searchers Wednesday in the Yuba River Canyon was that of missing miner Walter Steever.

Undersheriff Joe Salivar said an autopsy to determine the cause of death could be completed by Friday morning. There were no signs of foul play, he said, and it appears that Steever, 65, died of natural causes.

Steever left his home in San Jose to work his Nevada County mining claim on Oct. 23. He failed to return home and his wife contact authorities Monday.

Several agencies, including some from the Bay Area, joined in ground and air searches Tuesday and Wednesday, locating a body about midday Wednesday.

Salivar said Steever's body was found about 1,500 feet from where his truck was parked on Owl Creek Road near the south fork of the Yuba River. He said it appeared that Steever was making his way back up from the river, cutting through brush, rather than following a path or trail. The brush made the body difficult to spot, Salivar said.
