A 5-year-old boy has been reunited with his mother after someone drove off in her car with the youngster in the back seat.
The incident occurred about 5:15 p.m.outside a Merryhill School in 2800 block of Eastern Avenue. A woman called 911 to report that her car had been stolen with her son inside the vehicle.
She told deputies that she had gone to the school to pick up an older child. She went inside, leaving the younger child in the vehicle with the doors unlocked and the engine running, according to Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Sgt. Lisa Bowman.
When the woman returned to the parking lot about five minutes later, her car was gone. She ran back into the school to use a phone to call 911. When she returned to the parking lot, she saw her 5-year-old son standing in a business parking lot about 30 feet away. Her vehicle also was in the business parking lot with the engine running. Her purse was missing from the vehicle.
The boy described the thief as a bald man in his 30s, with a red and green tattoo on his right arm.
Bowman said the thief initially may not have realized that the child was in the vehicle.
