Assistant Chief Niko King of Sacramento Fire Department said the two-alarm fire was reported at 3:26 p.m. in grass and brush on the north side of the river. He said eight engines were dispatched, and Sacramento firefighters were assisted by a dozer and helicopter from the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District.
Smoke from the fire was visible from the Capital City Freeway and Howe Avenue. King said the fire was reported by numerous callers but does not appear to be of suspicious origin. He said there were no reports of anyone seen leaving the area when it started.
It was contained after burning 5 to 7 acres, King said.
