Classes for students enrolled in cosmetology and dental programs were canceled today after a fire damaged a building housing the El Dorado Union High School District's Regional Occupational Program.
Administrators on the Shenandoah High School campus on Koki Lane in the community of El Dorado discovered the fire just before 9 a.m. today in the ROP cosmetology building and called the fire department, according to a district news release. No staff members or students were present at the time of the fire.
In addition to the cosmetology program, the Shenandoah site includes multiple buildings that house the district's Virtual Academy, ROP dental program and the AP computer science classroom.
The fire was extinguished without damage to nearby structures, officials said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Although the adjoining structure housing ROP dental classes was not damaged, this building, as well as the cosmetology building, was without electrical and data services due to the fire, resulting in cancellation of classes.
Students taking other classes at the site were moved to Union Mine High School, adjacent to the ROP site.
Officials said district administrators are working with cosmetology students and their families regarding curricular and program needs.
