Fundraiser set for family displaced by Roseville shootout

A fundraiser is scheduled for Wednesday to benefit a young family displaced after a suspect holed up in their residence during a standoff with police.

Gary Wunder said that proceeds from a barbecue and drink sales at his Country Club Saloon, 4007 Taylor Road, in Loomis, will go to the couple and their small child. The fundraiser starts at 4:40 p.m. Wednesday.

The family has not been able to live in their rental home since a fleeing parolee entered the residence on Friday and engaged in a long, sporadic gun battle with police. The were able to escape.

The suspect, identified as Sammy Duran, 32, was eventually arrested. Police said Duran fired first in the shootout that left six officers injured.

"We are trying to help these kids out," said Wunder. "They got out of there with the shirts on their backs. Their house got shot up. They are just a couple of 20 something year-olds with a 15-month-old baby. They didn't have much to start with."

A beer company representative is donating beer and others are chipping in with cash.

Wunder has known the husband's family for 20 years. The couple, who don't wish to be named, are staying with family.

"The house looks like Swiss cheese," said Wunder. "They will eventually have to find some place to live."
