Sacramento County sheriff's deputies investigated a report of a possible gun at John Barrett Middle School in Carmichael on Thursday afternoon, but no weapon was found, according to authorities.
A campus lock down was lifted and students were released at 1:08 p.m. according to the normal Thursday schedule, said Trent Allen, spokesman for San Juan Unified School District.
About 12:30 p.m., a student at Barrett told a staff member he thought he saw another student carrying a gun. School officials contacted the Sheriff's Department and deputies responded to investigate.
The campus initially was placed on lock down, which transitioned into a "shelter in place" order, Allen said. That means instruction is continuing but students and staff members must stay in their classrooms.
When deputies found nothing to confirm the report, students were released from the school day as normal, Allen said.
A message was sent home to parents notifying them of the incident.
