Police are asking for help from anyone who may have witnessed a fight and shooting that left a 15-year-old boy dead Saturday afternoon in south Sacramento.

According to Sacramento police, a shooting was reported at 1:58 p.m. at a shopping center parking lot in the 4500 block of Mack Road near Franklin Boulevard. The incident started when a physical altercation broke out between several teenagers and another group.

"It escalated into a shooting when one of the persons involved produced a handgun and began firing," said Officer Doug Morse, Sacramento Police spokesman.

Multiple shots were fired at the group, striking the victim. The suspect reportedly fled on foot moments after the shooting.

First on the scene was a California Highway Patrol officer, who was driving by when he saw the victim on the ground. He immediately rendered emergency aid, Morse said.

The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he died of his wounds.

Homicide detectives say several people fled the scene after shots were fired.

"There were multiple people believed to be on scene at the time of the shooting," Morse said. "Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed or were involved in this incident to please contact police."

Anyone with information pertaining to this incident may contact the police dispatch center at (916) 264-5471.
