Prescribed burn with American Indian input today in S. Sacramento County

A prescribed burn at the Cosumnes River Preserve scheduled for today is being carried out by firefighters, academic officials and American Indians.

The project focuses on Plains Miwok burning traditions to achieve ecosystem restoration at the preserve in southern Sacramento County, and is a small part of a larger initiative involving indigenous stewardship practices, according to Don Hankins, field director, California State University, Chico Ecological Reserves.

The burn will be conducted east of Highway 99 between Cosumnes River and Dillard Road within the Costello forest.

Among those involved in the burn are the Plains Miwok, the California Indian Water Commission, CSU, Chico, preserve managers and the Cosumnes Fire Department.
