Suspect in Lake Tahoe-area bank robberies arrested in Reno

harnett james patrick.pngA man suspected of committing two Lake Tahoe-area bank robberies has been arrested in Reno.

James Patrick Harnett (pictured), 49, of San Francisco, was taken into custody at the Reno Transit Center about 5 p.m. Monday by Placer County sheriff's deputies, assisted by the Washoe County Sheriff's Office. Harnett was considered armed and dangerous, as well as a flight risk, according to a Placer County Sheriff's Office news release.

Harnett is suspected of robbing the Bank of the West in Kings Beach on Aug. 23 and the El Dorado Savings Bank in South Lake Tahoe two days earlier.

Placer County detectives received information that Harnett was in the downtown Reno area and a warrant for his arrest has been issued. A Washoe County sheriff's detective initially contacted Harnett as he was attempting to make a call from a pay phone inside the transit center, officials said. He was taken into custody without incident.

Harnett is currently in the Washoe County Sheriff's Main Jail in Reno awaiting extradition to Placer County.
