QUINCY - A tractor-trailer truck heading east in the Feather River Canyon early Tuesday morning hit a rock in the roadway and jackknifed, killing the driver and starting a fire.
The driver of the 2003 Freightliner ruptured a fuel tank after he lost control of his truck, said California Highway Patrolman Blair Parrott.
The truck was fully engulfed in flames, trapping the driver inside. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Parrott said.
The fire damaged the roadway, resulting in a complete closure of state Highway 70 four miles west of Belden for nearly nine hours, said Trisha Corder, a Caltrans spokeswoman.
Caltrans reopened the highway at noon.
The victim's name has been withheld pending notification of his relatives.
