The death of a 2-year-old boy at an Arden Arcade apartment Tuesday was caused by "blunt abdominal injury," according to the Sacramento County Coroner's Office.
The Coroner's Office has classified that death of William Philyaw as a homicide, or "death at the hands of another." In a news release issued late this afternoon, the Coroner's Office stated that the ruling of homicide is for the purposes of death certification and "neither indicates nor implies criminal intent." Officials said it is up to Sacramento County sheriff's investigators to determine whether the injury resulted from a criminal act.
Sheriff's spokeswoman Sgt Lisa Bowman said an investigation is underway.
Sheriff's deputies responded to a 911 call at 1:27 p.m. Tuesday regarding a baby who had been found not breathing at an apartment at 2930 Watt Ave. The call was made by a neighbor, but the baby's mother got on the phone about a minute afterward, Bowman said.
The boy was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
