Two men arrested in alleged "bait bike" thefts

Two men were arrested for suspicion of stealing bait bikes in midtown Sacramento last week.

At 10:14 p.m. last Wednesday, a bait bike parked near 20th and J streets was moved, activating its tracking sensor, police said. The signal led officers to 8th and K streets and from there to a light rail train.

Police officers stopped the train, boarded and confronted a passenger holding the bait bike. Police arrested 31-year-old Robert Gordon, 31, (pictured) for investigation of possessing stolen property. Gordon released from Sacramento County jail on Saturday.

The next day, at 10:46 p.m., police officers were alerted to another bait bike parked in the 1000 block of Alhambra Boulevard. They found a suspect a short distance away who allegedly was in the process of dismantling the bike.

The suspect was identified as Raul Esteban Lujan, 47, (pictured below). He was taken into custody for investigation of possessing stolen property. He remained in Sacramento County Jail Sunday on $40,000 bond.

Police said arrests were indications that the bait bike program in midtown is working.

The program began earlier this year after a rash of bicycle thefts from the downtown area from 18th to 19th streets and L Street to Capitol Mall.

Two bicycles purchased by the business district in July were equipped with tracking sensors and parked in various locales in the area. The bicycles' sensors are activated when the bikes are moved.
