Newscastle man accused of setting fire to home as mother slept

image002.jpgA 20-year-old man has been arrested after he allegedly set fire to his Newcastle home while his mother slept upstairs.

Sean James Petty (pictured) was taken into custody this morning by Placer County sheriff's detectives after they investigated the 5:30 a.m.fire at the Rock Springs Road home of Petty's mother. South Placer Fire District personnel had requested that arson investigators come to the scene. Detectives found a gasoline can and other items used to set fire to the side of the residence, according to a Sheriff's Department news release.

Petty's mother was alerted to the fire by smoke detectors. She was not injured, but her house sustained significant damage, sheriff's officials said.

Petty was arrested on suspicion of arson to an inhabited dwelling and booked into Placer County Jail with bail set at $50,000.
