Sacramento County Sheriff's department arrested a Sacramento woman early Monday for allegedly beating a 78-year-old Rancho Cordova man to death and critically injuring his wife Sunday.
Shauna Burton, 36, (pictured) was held without bond at the Sacramento County Jail. She is facing charges of murder, assault with a deadly weapon, robbery, motor vehicle theft and probation violation.
Early Sunday morning, police found a 78-year-old man had been beaten to death and his wife critically injured in their home in the Briarwood Mobile Home Park, located at Routier Road near Folsom Boulevard.
The victim was identified by neighbors and relatives as Mel Bain, a former Aerojet employee who later worked as a security guard, and his wife as Jean Bain, who had suffered recently from dementia. Authorities said Jean Bain was in critical condition at a local hospital Monday.
Burton apparently knew the couple, although it was not known exactly what the relationship was.
"She knows them somehow," said Sgt. Lisa Bowman, spokeswoman for Sacramento County Sheriff's Department. "Neighbors have seen her and call her by name."
Sometime before 7 a.m. Sunday, Burton allegedly stole a car from a male acquaintance who lives on Aries Way in Sacramento. At 7:15 a.m. she allegedly was responsible for an armed robbery of a CVS Pharmacy, 3301 Zinfandel Drive, in Rancho Cordova, according to the sheriff's department. She had a gun and demanded that the cash drawer be opened, the department said.
Witnesses and surveillance at the pharmacy showed the stolen vehicle, a 1991 two-door Cadillac Eldorado, maroon with a white top, and the license plate 2XMF374. A good description of Burton also was obtained.
Authorities believe that sometime between 7:15 a.m. and 11 a.m., when the Rancho Cordova man was found dead, Burton had visited the Briarwood Mobile Home Park.
"She was seen around the mobile home park in Routier," said Bowman. "Witnesses had seen her around the area in the stolen car."
The vehicle was later found abandoned on Sunday. However, Burton apparently returned to Aries Way, where she was arrested shortly after midnight. At the time, she did not have a weapon, authorities said. They added Burton did not appear to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Investigators are still trying to determine a motive for the slaying, but do not believe there is another suspect.
"We're not sure that it's a robbery," said Bowman. "We do not know if anything is missing."
A check of Sacramento court records show that Burton has a criminal record dating back to 1997. She had been convicted of several misdemeanor charges of theft, as well as two felony drug charges.
Her most recent conviction in July was for domestic violence and assault with a deadly weapon - both felonies. She apparently received 5 years probation and spent 120 days in jail.
The sheriff's department is still seeking information about the crime at the mobile home. Anyone who has information should contact the homicide bureau at (916) 7874-5115.
