Somerset man killed in head-on crash in Sutter County

A 61-year-old Somerset man died this afternoon in a head-on collision on Highway 20 in Sutter County.

The crash occurred about 3:15 p.m. The man, whose name has not been released pending notification of family, was westbound on Highway 20, west of the Sutter Bypass Bridge, when for some reason he allowed his Ford F 250 pickup to enter the eastbound lane, according to a California Highway Patrol news release. The pickup collided head on with an eastbound big-rig truck and trailer.

Following the collision, the big rig bounced off the concrete guardrail on the south side of the highway and came to rest, on its wheels, against the north guardrail. The trailer was empty and also remained on its wheels, blocking the entire roadway, the CHP reported.

The pickup came to rest on its wheels, facing west in the westbound lane. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the big rig, a 53-year-old man from Yuba City, was transported by ambulance to Rideout Memorial Hospital in Marysville with minor injuries.

The cause of the collision is under investigation.
