Update: Trip to Reno ends in deadly crash

By Phillip Reese

One person was killed, and six others were injured when the brakes in their van apparently gave out near Gold Run in Placer County.

Emergency officials got a call from someone inside the Chevy Astro van about 4:40 p.m. and were told that the van, traveling westbound on Interstate 80, was out of control, according to CHP Officer Chris Nave.

The driver of the van took the exit for Gold Run Road, a dead end street. The van, going about 50 miles per hour, hit another car at the end of the road, veered onto a dirt road, went down an embankment and caught fire. Emergency officials pulled the occupants out of the van.

Frances Sevilla, 90, of Roseville, died. Another two were carried by helicopter to area hospitals. The others in the van suffered moderate injuries. All were Placer County residents. The driver of the car that the van struck was not badly hurt, Nave said.

All of the passengers were over age 55. They had just been in Reno, Nave said.
