Sean James Petty (pictured) was taken into custody this morning by Placer County sheriff's detectives after they investigated the 5:30 at the Rock Springs Road home of Petty's mother. South Placer Fire District personnel had requested that arson investigators come to the scene. Detectives found a gasoline can and other items used to set fire to the side of the residence, according to a Sheriff's Department news release.

Petty's mother was alerted to the fire by smoke detectors. She was not injured, but her house sustained significant damage, sheriff's officials said.

Petty was arrested on suspicion of arson to an inhabited dwelling and booked into Placer County Jail with bail set at $50,000.

Auburn man arrested on suspicion of setting fires at Rocklin hotel

By Tillie Fong

Rocklin police arrested an Auburn man at his home Wednesday for reportedly setting at least two fires at a Rocklin hotel.

Hoyt Starkey (pictured below), 51, was held at Placer County Jail on suspicion of arson of an inhabited dwelling. Bond was set at $150,000.

Starkey is suspected of being responsible for two recent fires at the Howard Johnson Hotel, 4420 Rocklin Road. Dates were not given for those fires.

Although the blazes caused minor damage, they are considered felony violations.

On Sunday, a mattress caught fire at the same hotel, setting off the fire sprinklers and caused an estimated $100,000 in damage to that room as well as 10 others.

Starkey is considered a person of interest in Sunday's fire, as the investigation continues, officials said.
