QUESTION: In 1993, Brian Hintz, a Sacramento prosecutor, was shot an killed in Elk Grove. Was anyone convicted, and what was the outcome of the trial?
Submitted by: D. Pinto, Elk Grove

ANSWER:Brian Hintz, a deputy district attorney in Sacramento, was fatally shot Sept. 29, 1993, by his 17-year-old nephew on property Hintz owned in Elk Grove.

The youth, who was not identified by The Bee because of his age, was convicted in Juvenile Court of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to the California Youth Authority in 1994. He was to be eligible for release in four years.

The prosecutor said the youth shot Hintz, 32, in the chest with a hunting rifle after the two argued over an engine hoist the boy did not have permission to use.

Hintz's family said the shooting was especially tragic because the teen, who had been shuttled among family members' homes, had been closer to Hintz than to any other adult.

The youth had been living with a friend in a camper shell on Hintz's property in the Laguna area for about a month before the shooting.

A visiting judge heard the case and the state Attorney General's Office prosecuted it because of potential conflicts stemming from Hintz's job as a deputy district attorney.
