Sweet competition brewing among local cupcake shops

Turns out Sacramento-based Cupcake Craving isn't the only sweet shop in the region to be approached by the Food Network.

Producers at "Cupcake Wars" also contacted Icing on the Cupcake, a Rocklin bakery, Babycakes Bakery and Esther's Cupcakes, both in Sacramento, and asked the owners to apply to be on the show.

"Cupcake Wars" is a weekly show that pits the nation's top cupcake bakers against one another in three elimination challenges. The winner gets $10,000 and the chance to showcase their cupcakes at a high-profile event.

Christee Owens, one of three Icing on the Cupcake owners, said she loves the show, but admitted that competing on national television is a little daunting.

"It makes me nervous, but I'd be taking my bakery manager, Stephani Leigh, with me," Owens said.

Kristine Bertram, of Babycakes on J Street, said producers told her if chosen, they'd likely tape the competition in September. The show would air in December.

Bertram said she thinks her frosting would set her cupcakes apart from her competitors.

"One of the things that makes us stand out from (other shops in the area) is that we use an Italian buttercream," she said.

A staffer at Esther's Cupcakes, a new cupcake bakery at the corner of Monroe and Fair Oaks Boulevard, said she heard they also were contacted and will be submitting an application soon.

There also seems to be a bit of rivalry between the two of the cupcake shops outside the television arena.

Cupcake Craving opened its Folsom store at 1167 Riley Street on Friday.

On Saturday, Icing on the Cupcake opened its store at 2779 East Bidwell St., Folsom.

Icing on the Cupcake also is planning to open a Midtown location "shortly," Owens said.
