Terry Logue appreciates any defensive effort, so imagine the Bear River defensive coordinator's sigh of relief and moment of elation after his Bruins toppled No. 16 Colfax 31-12.

The Falcons had beaten the Bruins seven successive times with some offensive outbursts, a fact that Colfax fans made sure their visitors would know with a banner that listed the scores of the previous meetings. In addition, the Colfax banner read that the Falcons will "BBQ the Bruins." Ouch.

No wonder Bear River fans chanted "barbeque, barbeque, barbeque" down the stretch.

Bear River won with defense and with a running game that included Jason Varni (156 yards, two touchdowns) and Johnny Jewett (79 yards).

Not that Logue's job will get any easier.

The next two games? Lindhurst, an athletic bunch that played in the Division IV section title game, and No. 6 Whitney.
