Catching up with former Pioneer High wrestler Dominic Borelli

dominicborelli.JPGFormer Pioneer High wrestler Dominic Borelli is at Cal State Fullerton, his "dream school," according to a 2009 interview in The Bee.

"Dominic is in his second year on our team," Fullerton coach Dan Hicks wrote in an e-mail. "He is doing well in school and in wrestling. He is preparing to challenge for a varsity spot this year at the 165-pound class. He came into the school (year) in great shape, having put the time in over the summer. I expect him to have a great year."

Borelli did not compete as a freshman. Fullerton opens its season Oct. 23 in the Cal Baptist Open in Riverside.

As a Pioneer senior, Borelli qualified for the 2009 CIF State Championship at 171 pounds.

Following a first-round defeat, Borelli won his next three matches in the losers' bracket before he was eliminated by a technical fall.

As a junior, he was ranked seventh in the area at 171 pounds. He qualified for the state meet that season as well, but lost his first-round match to Jake Meredith of Temecula Valley, who lost in the final.

Borelli lost his first match in the losers' bracket.
