Roundup: Top-ranked Elk Grove wins in baseball, falls in softball

There were plenty of fireworks today as a number of area ranked softball and baseball teams clashed in league and nonleague play.

Among the baseball highlights:

• With the bases loaded and two out in the bottom of the seventh and all runners sprinting on the pitch, J.D. Davis hit a towering pop fly to short left field that dropped between two fielders and the top-ranked Elk Grove Thundering Herd rallied to stun the No. 4 Franklin Wildcats 8-7 in a Delta Valley Conference game Monday. Jon Zunich and Tyler Blake each had three hits for Franklin. Davis had three doubles for Elk Grove.

• The unranked Del Oro Golden Eagles rallied for three runs in the sixth inning to stun the No. 6 Rocklin Thunder in a Sierra Foothill League game. Tommy Mullen went two for two with a double and two RBI for Del Oro. Chris Streeter went two for two with a home run and two RBI for Rocklin.

• The unranked Woodcreek Timberwolves and No. 12 Roseville Tigers combined for 29 hits in a wild back-and-forth SFL game eventually won 12-11 by Woodcreek. Matt Parks led Roseville's 17-hit attack with two home runs, a double and three RBI. Garrett Nunally also went four for four with two doubles. For Woodcreek, Kramer Sutey was two for three with a home run and three RBI and Kyle Dixon three for three with a double.

• Ben Eckels and Reinert Toft combined to pitch a two-hitter as the No. 10 Davis Blue Devils defeated Laguna Creek 7-0 in a DVC game. Josh Cosio had a triple, single and drove in two runs for Davis.

• Jared Lawton, Jacob Wilkey and Sean Frost combined for a one-hitter in the No. 8 Casa Roble Rams' 2-1 win over Del Campo in a Capital Valley Conference game.

Among the softball highlights:

• The No. 2 Sheldon Huskies overcame four errors and pitcher Alexis Cooper scattered three hits to beat top-ranked Elk Grove 4-3 in a nonleague game. Zamari Hinton and Danielle Henderson each had two hits for Sheldon. Carlee Gray had two hits for Elk Grove.

• Ally Carda struck out 12 and allowed three hits and Amber Murray had a double and drove in two runs to lead the No. 5 Pleasant Grove Eagles past the No. 4 Oak Ridge Trojans 3-0 in a Delta River League game.

• Erin Nicole and Maddie Phelps combined to scatter four hits in leading the No. 8 Bear River Burins past the No. 15 Del Oro Eagles in a nonleague game. Ashleigh Higginbotham had two hits and Stephanie Ceo a triple for Bear River.
