Upsets do happen, and the mightiest of all programs do tend to take a tumble every now and then.
Taytana Garrett scored on an assist from fellow sophomore Lauren Aldana as the Franklin Wildcats of Elk Grove stunned the nationally ranked No. 1 Davis Blue Devils 1-0 in a girls soccer match this afternoon in Elk Grove.
Wildcats keeper Marcela Young, also just a sophomore, was superb in the net during the intense Delta Valley Conference contest that surely boosts the playoff chances and morale of Franklin and coach Eliseo Lopez.
Davis, hoping to secure another mythical national title under longtime coach Allen Carlson, tasted defeat for the first time after roaring to a 21-0 start, including 9-0 in league play. Davis had not allowed a goal in its previous eight games, a stretch in which the Blue Devils outscored foes 50-0.
The last time Davis yielded a goal was to Franklin on April 7, a 3-1 Blue Devils victory. Garrett scored the lone Franklin goal in that game.
Franklin is now 7-2 in league and 10-7-3 overall after facing a brutal nonleague schedule that includes regional powers Granite Bay, Napa and Rio Americano.
