Sprinters lead 16 area athletes into Saturday's state track finals

Sixteen area athletes, including sprinters Breonntae Snelling of Kennedy, Shaq Thompson of Grant and Nia Dorner of Rosemont, have advanced to Saturday's CIF State Track and Field championship finals in Clovis after qualifying at today's trials.

Among the highlights:

• Snelling had the fifth fastest time of 10.77 seconds in the boys 100 meters. Snelling may have benefited by being in the same heat as pre-race favorite Remontay McClain of Covina. The defending state champion ran the fastest time of the night, a sizzling 10.31 (just off the state meet record of 10.30).

• Snelling also qualified for Saturday's 200-meter final with the seventh fastest time of 21.75. Grant's Thompson was right on his heels, finishing with the eighth fastest time of 21.77. Both ran in the same heat as McClain, who recorded the top 200 time of 20.92. He also is a defending state champion in the 200.

• Like Snelling, Dorner qualified in two events. The sophomore had the third fastest time in the girls 200 (24.22) and the fifth fastest in the girls 400 (55.08).

• Jesuit's Stephen Boals qualified in both throwing events. Boals' heave of 60 feet, 10 1/2 inches was the second best in the boys shot put. His rival, Nicholas Scarvelis of Dos Pueblo, threw 62-9 1/4. Boals also landed the last spot in boys discus qualifying with the ninth best toss of 171-01

• Davis' Ian Rock also qualified in two events, placing sixth on jumps in the boys pole vault at 15-3 and seventh in the boys long jump at 22-7 1/4.

• Granite Bay's Katie Zingheim qualified No. 1 in the girls pole vault along with five others. All cleared 11 feet, 9 inches on their first jumps. Bella Vista Angie Charles also vaulted 11-9 but placed a qualifying ninth on jumps.

• Two-time Masters champion Lawre'll Dobbins of Foothill was one of four with a top high jump mark of 5-4.

• Del Oro's boys 4x400 relay of Kenneth Andri, Kenneth VonAlkversalban, Blake Covey and Austin Smith, in winning Heat 1, had the third fastest time at 3:17.71 Long Beach Poly ran a 3:14.60 and Great Oak of Temecula a 3:17.50.
