National duo lead Cal-Hi's preseason all-section football team

Seventeen area players, including national recruits Shaq Thompson of Grant and Arik Armstead of Pleasant Grove, have been named to Cal-Hi Sports' Sac-Joaquin Section preseason 28-man all-section football team.

Armstead, a senior tackle who has verbally committed to USC, is ranked No. 7 and No. 14, and Thompson, a senior running back-defensive back, is No. 8 and No. 22, respectively, by Maxpreps.com and ESPN RISE in their national player rankings.

Thompson is one of three Grant players on Cal-Hi's first team, joining senior quarterback-running back Terry Shine and senior placekicker Charlie Vu.

Named with Armstead from nationally ranked and defending Division I section champion Pleasant Grove is senior running back Mark Jenkins.

Eagles junior defensive back-wide receiver Josh Adams and senior placekicker-punter Marcus White made the second team. Pleasant Grove is ranked No. 8 nationally by Maxpreps.com.

Defending D-II section and CIF State Bowl champion Folsom did not have a player named to either the first or second teams.

Joining Vue, Jenkins and Armstead on the offensive first team are Whitney quarterback and Oregon commit Jake Rodrigues and tight end Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick; Inderkum wide receiver D.J. Myart; Granite Bay offensive lineman Gavin Andrews; Elk Grove offensive lineman Steven Moore; Monterey Trail offensive lineman Leonard Wood; and Union Mine running back Sean Tow. All are seniors except for Tow, a junior.

Named to the defense are Burbank defensive lineman Maile Fainu; Del Oro linebacker Alex Bertrando; Elk Grove defensive back Deon Ransom; and Cosumnes Oaks defensive back Marcus Rios. All are seniors.

Joining Thompson and Shine on first team multi-purpose is Casa Roble quarterback-running back Mitch Samson.

Selected along with Adams and White to the second team are Casa Roble linebacker Cameron Buell; Oak Ridge wide receiver Dylan Collie and placekicker Jon David Smith; Rio Linda quarterback Cole Farrow; and Nevada Union defensive back Gabe Humphers.

Also named to the second team are Granite Bay quarterback Brendan Keeney; Roseville running back Casey Lambert; Whitney wide receiver Corey Palin; and Franklin linebacker Jordan Owensby.

All but Adams are seniors.
