A closer look at prep football Bowl rankings; Del Oro No. 1 by Cal-Hi and MaxPreps

Breaking down the Bowl rankings provided by our good friends from Cal-Hi Sports and editor Mark Tennis and also from MaxPreps based on computer rankings and compiled by the incomparable Kevin Askland.

Keep in mind that it is the section commissioners from the 10 sections in this state that vote on teams. Strength of schedule is paramount, and even close losses to ranked teams do not doom a team. Only section champions are considered for bowl games.

Division I North
1. (1) De La Salle (Concord) 6-1
2. (2) Bellarmine (San Jose) 6-1
3. (3) Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove) 7-1
4. (4) Lincoln (Stockton) 7-1
5. (5) San Ramon Valley (Danville) 6-1

6. (6) California (San Ramon) 6-1
7. (7) Palma (Salinas) 6-0-1
8. (8) Granite Bay 6-2
9. (9) Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) 4-2-1
10. (10) Serra (San Mateo) 6-1
11. (11) James Logan (Union City) 7-0
12. (12) Oak Grove (San Jose) 6-1
13. (13) Nevada Union (Grass Valley) 5-3
14. (15) Palo Alto 5-2
15. (NR) St. Francis (Mountain View) 3-4
Others : Burbank (Sacramento) 7-1, Deer Valley (Antioch) 4-3, Franklin (Elk Grove) 6-2, Freedom (Oakley) 6-1, Pitman (Turlock) 7-1, Woodcreek (Roseville) 5-3.
Outlook: Of all the ranked teams in this division that lost last week, you have to go all the way down to Pittsburg to find one that didn't fall to a higher ranked foe. The Pirates have been among the most disappointing teams this season, based on preseason expectations, but can still end up in a three-way tie for the Bay Valley Athletic League title if Freedom were to beat Deer Valley this week. Two big games to watch this week involving teams in this division are No. 1 De La Salle hosting No. 5 San Ramon Valley and No. 2 Bellarmine hosting No. 10 Serra of San Mateo. No. 3 Pleasant Grove also will be in a major matchup against defending CIF Division II state champ Folsom.

Division II North
1. (1) Del Oro (Loomis) 7-1
2. (2) Buhach Colony (Atwater) 8-0
3. (3) Elk Grove 8-0
4. (4) Grant (Sacramento) 5-3
5. (5) Folsom 7-1
6. (6) St. Mary's (Stockton) 6-2
7. (7) Vacaville 7-1
8. (9) Paradise 8-0
9. (10) Oakdale 8-0
10. (NR) Manteca 8-0
Others: Chico 6-2, Leland (San Jose) 7-0, Casa Roble (Orangevale) 6-2, Foothill (Palo Cedro) 7-1, Inderkum (Sacramento) 7-1, Los Gatos 5-1-1, Placer (Auburn) 6-2, Roseville 5-3, Windsor 7-0.
Outlook: One week after coach Butch Cattolico won his 250th game, Los Gatos took a step back with a league loss to Milpitas. Although Milpitas would be D1 North for the bowl games, Los Gatos also has a tie on its record so the team had to drop from this week's rankings. It was easy to find a replacement, too. This week is the annual Valley Oak League showdown between Oakdale and Manteca and this time both teams enter at 8-0 overall. Watch out as well for No. 5 Folsom playing No. 3 D1 North Pleasant Grove. If the Bulldogs win, there would be justification for moving them higher in all rankings despite having an opening game loss to Grant. They proved last year what they can do after losing the first game and they are a defending CIF state champ.

Division III North
1. (1) Cardinal Newman (Santa Rosa) 6-0-1
2. (2) Marin Catholic (Kentfield) 8-0
3. (3) Escalon 8-0
4. (4) Encinal (Alameda) 6-1
5. (5) Colfax 8-0
6. (7) Salesian (Richmond) 7-0
7. (8) Carmel 7-0
8. (NR) Campolindo (Moraga) 8-0
9. (9) Hilmar 8-1
10. (10) Sutter 8-0
Others: Bear River (Lake of the Pines) 6-2, Bishop O'Dowd (Oakland) 5-2, Miramonte (Orinda) 7-1, Orland 8-0, Ripon 6-2, Sacred Heart Prep (Atherton) 6-1, Terra Nova (Pacifica) 5-2.
Outlook: With junior quarterback Brett Stephens passing for 273 yards and four touchdowns, Campolindo rolled to a 42-6 win against Miramonte in a matchup of unbeaten rival schools. With the win, the Cougars jumped to No. 8 in this week's rankings. Salesian naturally moved up a spot to No. 6 with Carmel doing the same to No. 7. Salesian is the only team ranked in the top 10 from the CIF North Coast Section that will be in that section's Division IV playoffs. All of the others - Cardinal Newman, Marin Catholic, Encinal and Campolindo - will be in the NCS Division III playoffs.

Division IV North
1. (1) Central Catholic (Modesto) 6-2
2. (2) LeGrand 8-0
3. (3) Ferndale 6-1
4. (4) Bradshaw Christian (Sacramento) 7-1
5. (7) Millennium (Tracy) 7-0
6. (NR) Live Oak 7-1
7. (10) Berean Christian (Walnut Creek) 5-2
8. (9) Rio Vista 7-1
9. (8) Durham 6-2
10. (5) Valley Christian (Dublin) 6-1
Others: California School for the Deaf (Fremont) 6-1, Hamilton (Hamilton City) 6-2, Hoopa Valley (Hoopa) 5-2, Modesto Christian 4-4, St. Bernard (Eureka) 6-1.
Outlook: There seems to be a fairly large gap after the first four teams in this division with Millennium of Tracy still a bit on the unproven side. More evidence of that was No. 3 Ferndale spanking previously unbeaten St. Bernard of Eureka 56-0. This comes after Bradshaw Christian topped Rio Vista easily and after previous No. 5 Valley Christian of Dublin lost last week 35-14 to Berean Christian. In the Northern Section, Live Oak makes a big move after it defeated previous No. 8 Durham 40-26. Live Oak's only loss is by just one point to Pierce of Arbuckle.
