Latest Bee rankings with key wins, tough losses, projections

A peek at The Bee's latest Top 20 prep football rankings.

Dig in, debate, discuss, but also keep in mind strength of schedule. And if you suggest a team that should be in or lower or higher, explain. Or better yet, offer your own Top 10 or 20.

The Bee's Top 20
1. Pleasant Grove 5-1
Lost by a point to Lincoln-Stockton;have rolled all comers since with balance, unyielding defense, leadership.
Next: at Jesuit, Saturday
2. Del Oro 5-1
Lost in OT to state-ranked Westlake early (Westlake 6-0); dominating O-line, balanced offense and big-play D and special teams leading way.
Next: at Nevada Union.
3. Elk Grove 6-0
Herd has wins vs. Nevada Union, Sheldon, Grant thanks to terrific line play under line coach Moe Loller, and D and run game superb, too.
Next: vs. Franklin

4. Granite Bay 5-1
Wins over St. Mary's, Clovis West, Pittsburg, Nevada Union; lost to Vacaville, now 5-1; great QB play from Brendan Keeney and just enough D stops.
Next: vs. Woodcreek
5. Franklin 5-1
Wildcats are young but skilled, well coached and eager; wins vs. Sheldon, O'Dowd; lost to Freedom-Oakley, now 6-0.
Next: vs. Elk Grove
6. Grant 3-3
Pacers D-line got wake up call from Elk Grove's front and will respond or expect more losses; Shaq Thompson can't do it alone.
Next: vs. Monterey Trail
7. Folsom 5-1
Bulldogs lost opener to Grant; wins vs. Deer Valley, SR Valley, Roseville, Jesuit; D still allowing too much for Max Miller's taste.
Next: at Sheldon
8. Nevada Union 4-2
Miners have lost back-to-back games to Elk Grove, Granite Bay as they usher in new QB in place of injured Kyle Cota; still extremely dangerous.
Next: vs. Del Oro
9. Placer 5-1
Wins now include 10-6 slugfest vs. previous 5-0 Bear River; lost only a shutout to Casa Roble despite allowing just two second-half scores.
Next: vs. Lincoln
10. Sheldon 4-2
Wins include Oak Ridge on Friday 28-25 and Cosumnes Oaks; lost by a hair to Franklin and big to Elk Grove but is 2-0 since Herd setback.
Next: vs. Folsom
11. Oak Ridge 4-2
Trojans have tough losses to Del Oro and to Sheldon and now are dealing with loss of QB Jason Samuels; Oak Ridge will respond big, however.
Next: at Ponderosa
12. Bear River 5-1
Bruins have two terrific defensive gems against prolific teams in Woodcreek (a 24-10 win) and Placer, a 10-6 loss with Placer averaging 62 points.
Next: at Center
13. Roseville 4-2
Tigers recovered big from Pleasant Grove loss to belt Woodcreek with more balance and line play; other loss was a shootout to Folsom.
Next: vs. Rocklin
14. Colfax 6-0
Joins Elk Grove as area's only unbeaten teams; eager for showdown games in Pioneer Valley League against Placer, Bear River.
Next: vs. Foothill
15. Burbank 5-1
Titans will own the Metro League and has terrific skill set and fast defense; doubters should play this team; lost at Grant early.
Next: vs. Valley
16. Inderkum 4-2
Tigers have won 23 straight Tri-County League games and will continue to live large with wing-T, defense and coaching; lost to unbeaten Salesian.
Next: at Yuba City
17. Woodcreek 4-2
Timberwolves have playoff-caliber team with a big win vs. Casa Roble and tough losses to Bear River and Roseville.
Next: at Granite Bay
18. Casa Roble 4-2
Rams won shootout vs. Placer and has absorbed setbacks to Woodcreek and Folsom; gets fun now with chief rival now.
Next: vs. Del Campo
19. Whitney 4-2
Wildcats have suffered losses to state-ranked No. 1 Idaho team and Woodcreek but still looms as favorite in Capital Athletic League.
Next: vs. Rio Americano
20. Cosumnes Oaks 4-2
Wolfpack lost at Sheldon by a hair and by a whisker at home to Union Mine; great talent, young program with best challenges ahead.
Next: at Vista del Lago.
Others: Vista del Lago (4-2); Monterey Trail (3-3); Del Campo (4-2); Woodland 5-1; Highlands (5-1).
