In a battle of nationally ranked teams, Jesuit fell 2-1 on penalty kicks to DeMatha of Hyattsville, Md., on Saturday night in the Showcase Division of the Gateway Soccer Classic in St. Louis, Mo.
The two parochial powers played to a 1-1 draw in regulation and overtime before going to penalty kicks, which DeMatha won 4-1.
Dylan Wong had Jesuit's goal in regulation.
DeMatha entered the match ranked No. 2 and Jesuit No. 3 in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America national fall boys rankings.
In its other match at the 59-team tournament, Jesuit tied Chaminade of St. Louis, Mo., 1-1 on Thursday.
Jesuit's Michael De Sousa scored in the 73rd minute to tie the match seven minutes after Chaminade had taken a 1-0 lead on a goal by Jordan Bay.
Behind sophomore sensation Tommy Thompson, No. 24 Granite Bay finished 2-1 in the Bracket A division of the Gateway Classic.
Thompson had a hat trick as Granite Bay defeated Thomas Aquinas of Overland Park, Kan., 3-1 in Thursday's opener, then scored once in the Grizzlies' 4-1 win over Christian Brothers of St. Louis in Saturday's finale.
The wins were sandwiched between a 2-1 loss to No. 12 Cherry Creek of Aurora, Colo., on Friday in which Thompson scored on a penalty kick late in the match.
