Oakmont's Garcia wins Foot Locker cross country race

Oakmont High School junior Karlie Garcia won the Foot Locker Western Regional girls cross country championship today at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, covering the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes, 46 seconds.

Garcia, the Sac-Joaquin Section champion and CIF state Division III runner-up, went out hard at the start of the race and was followed closely by a large chase group.

At approximately two miles, Garcia took command of the course and never looked back in winning by nine seconds and advancing for the second time in three years to the Dec. 10 Foot Locker national championships in San Diego.

Vista del Lago's Clare Carroll also advance to the nationals by placing eighth in 18:33.
