Boys Top 20 roundup: Sheldon wins on Iese's buzzer-beater

Football standout Nate Iese's buzzer-beating layup lifted No. 2 Sheldon past Lincoln of San Diego 56-55 in Wednesday's second-round action of the ESPN Holiday Classic boys basketball tournament at Torrey Pines High School in Southern California.

Dakarai Allen pushed the ball up the court and found the open Iese, just seconds after Lincoln guard Tyree Robinson sank an off-balance 3-pointer to put the Hornets ahead.

Tyree Robinson finished with 17 points, while his twin brother Tyrell led all scorers with 24. Allen topped the Huskies with 14 points.

Sheldon will play El Camino Real of Woodland Hills 5:30 p.m. today.

In other action Wednesday:

• Top-ranked Jesuit defeated Oakland Tech 54-50 in the second round of the Leo LaRocca Sand Dune Classic in San Francisco.

• Santa Monica defeated No. 3 Sacramento 58-55 in the Oaks Christian Hardwood Classic in Westlake Village. Erik Kinney had 15 points and Darius Graham 14 to lead the Dragons, who play Eisenhower of Rialto 4 p.m. today.

• Malik Thames had 16 points and Matthew Hayes 15 in leading No. 4 Pleasant Grove to a 73-45 win over Simi Valley in the MaxPreps Holiday Classic in Palm Springs. The Eagles, who beat Pleasant Grove of Utah in Tuesday's opener, play Rancho Cucumonga 5:30 p.m. today.

• David Straughter's team-high 18 points wasn't enough as No. 5 Burbank fell to Bishop Alemany of Mission Hills 60-55 at the Modesto Christian Holiday Classic. Burbank will play El Camino Real of Woodland Hills at 5:30 p.m. today.

• Theo Johnson and Darin Johnson combined for 41 points as No. 6 Franklin downed Armijo 63-48 in the Fairfield Holiday Classic. Franklin plays Bethel of Vallejo 6 p.m. today.

• Gabe Bealer had 17 points and Isaiah Ellis 13 as No. 7 Antelope topped No. 15 Kennedy 54-44 in the Fairfield Holiday Classic. Antelope plays host Fairfield tonight.

• KJ Logue had 16 points as No. 9 Bella Vista defeated Pleasant Valley of Chico 67-43 in Oak Ridge's Trojan Toss-up. The Broncos will play El Dorado, a 70-51 winner over McClatchy, tonight at 8 o'clock.

• Despite Jordan Broyles' team-high 11 points, No. 11 Del Oro lost 44-38 to Hoover of Fresno in the Whitney Winter Classic.

• Johnny Hayes led a balanced scoring attack with 15 points in leading No. 12 Del Campo to a 71-63 win over Colfax in the 70th Kendall Arnett tournament at Placer High School. Del Campo plays Nevada Union today at 6:30 p.m.

• Christopher Smith had 24 points to lead No. 13 Center to a 62-42 win over No. 18 Capital Christian in the Whitney Winter Classic. Center plays No. 16 Whitney tonight at 6 o'clock. Whitney defeated North Valleys of Reno 62-48. Evan Orrick led Whitney with 15 points.

• Byrce Scott had 23 points and Matt Howard 20 as No. 14 Oak Ridge defeated Shasta 72-66 in the opening round of its own Trojan Toss-up. Oak Ridge plays Rio Americano at 6:30 p.m. tonight. Rio Americano defeated No. 19 Davis 86-80. Jude Aka and Zach Suarez each had 24 points for the Raiders.

• Sophomore Alex Van Dyke tallied 16 points to lead No. 17 Cosumnes Oaks to a 63-44 win over Gridley in the Lindhurst tournament. Cosumnes Oaks plays Highlands tonight at 7:30.

• No. 20 Cordova defeated Encina Prep 60-53 to advance to tonight's championship game of its own Cordova Christmas Classic. The Lancers will play St. Patrick-St. Vincent of Vallejo at 7:30.
