Elk Grove to host state youth soccer finals Saturday, Sunday

Some of the top youth soccer teams in Northern California will compete for state titles this weekend at Elk Grove's Bartholomew Sports Park, 10150 Franklin High Road.

The California Youth Soccer Association-North U-14-U-19 boys and girls teams will play Saturday and Sunday in President's Cup and State Cup matches.

The girls finals will be held Saturday; the boys finals on Sunday.

Four FC Elk Grove club teams have reached the finals, more than any other club in Northern California, according to club spokesman Kevin Slagle.

They are:

• The FC Elk Grove 96 Girls Orange (U16) will play the Stanford Typhoons of Palo Alto in a President's Cup final 10:30 a.m. Saturday on field No. 3.

• FC Elk Grove 94 Girls (U18) will take on the Central Valley Flames of San Jose in the State Cup final noon Saturday on field No. 2.

• FC Elk Grove 97 Boys (U15) play Porterville United in the President's Cup final at 1 p.m. Sunday on field No. 2.

• FC Elk Grove 96 Boys (U16) will play the Mission San Francisco Chivas 10:30 a.m. in a President's Cup final 10:30 a.m. on field No. 3.

"It is very rewarding to see the commitment and dedication of our players, coaches and the families that support them coming together to produce great results," said Cesar Plasencia, FC Elk Grove's director of coaching, in a news release. "The coaches and players deserve the credit for the success of our program on the field and for creating excitement about soccer in our community."

FC Elk Grove has already taken home State Cup championships in the U11 and U12 girls divisions, and Association Cup titles in the U9 and U14 boys divisions and the U13 girls division.

State Cup and President's Cup titles are for competitive-level teams.

Because of California's geographic size and the number of teams playing youth soccer, two state championships are held each year, one for Northern California teams the other for Southern California teams.

CYSA-North President's Cup champions will qualify for the United States Youth Soccer Far West Region IV finals June 12-17 in Arvada, Colo. CYSA-North State Cup champions will qualify for the USYS Far West regional finals June 18-24 in Phoenix, Ariz.

In addition to its state success, the FC Elk Grove U16 girls team won the national Adidas UEFA Young Champions title in Portland, Ore., on April 15.

The squad will represent the United States at the world finals of the 5 vs. 5 UEFA Young Champions tournament in Munich, Germany.

FC Elk Grove's team will travel to Germany May 14-20 to compete against European finalists, train at Bayern Munich's world-class soccer facilities and attend the men's and women's Champions League finals.
