Forward switches to goalie to keep CBS in soccer playoff chase

Christian Brothers senior forward and team captain Madeline Walsh, struggling with an ankle injury that will be surgically repaired after the season, found a way to help her Falcons' girls soccer team that is battling for a playoff berth in the Capital Valley Conference.

When an injury sidelined the CBS starting goalkeeper, Walsh volunteered to move into the nets. The Falcons promptly won three league matches and she had nine saves before CBS lost 5-0 to front-running Bella Vista on Tuesday.

Walsh is a four-year varsity player who made All-Sierra Valley Conference second team as a freshman and first team as a sophomore.

Two concussions and an ankle injury limited her to eight matches last season, but she still scored six goals and had an assist.

Walsh is a standout student, singer and musician who will attend Santa Clara in the fall.
