Reede III is Monterey Trail's first golf scholarship recipient

Senior James Reede III has become Monterey Trail High School's first golfer to receive a college scholarship after signing a national letter of intent on Monday with Jackson State University.

Reede, who plans to major in mechanical engineering, will play for coach Eddie Payton, the brother of NFL Hall of Famer Walter Payton, who coaches both the men's and women's golf teams at the Mississippi college.

Reede is a four-year team captain at Monterey Trail. As a freshmen, he was Monterey Trail's first Sac-Joaquin Section Division I qualifier.

Last August, he won the Western States Golf Association Junior Championship in Las Vegas, Nev., and qualified for the 2012 Junior PGA Championship.

Because of a friendship that Reede developed with Champions Tour and Charles Schwab Cup winner Loren Roberts, it led to Roberts donating $70,000 to save the boys and girls high school golf programs in the cash-strapped Elk Grove Unified School District.
