Yuba City's Hayes to play basketball for Dominican University

Matt Hayes, Yuba City High School's career scoring leader, has signed a letter of intent to play men's basketball at Dominican University in San Rafael.

The 6-foot-2 combo guard will join two other area players on the Penguins men's team.

Center graduate Connor Haysbert recently completed his sophomore season at the 2,200 Catholic school, and Bella Vista senior forward K.J. Logue recently announced his decision to play for the Penguins.

Dominican University, an NCAA Division II school, finished 11-18 overall and 10-8 in the Pacific West Conference this season.

Hayes finished his Yuba City career with 1,406 points.

As a senior, he averaged 23.4 points, 12.4 rebounds and 4.3 assists.

The Bee All-Metro second team selectee also repeated as Tri-County Conference MVP and was named the Marysville Appeal-Democrat's All-Area Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.

Hayes helped lead the 18-10 Honkers to a fifth consecutive league title.

His 34-point performance propelled Yuba City to a 74-65 upset of No. 6-seeded Del Campo in the opening round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs in Fair Oaks.
