Del Campo's softball girls of iron make a little bit of history

It was one of the feel-good stories of the Sac-Joaquin Section softball playoffs.

After upsetting league rival and defending D-II champion Casa Roble 3-2 in eight innings on May 22, Del Campo (16-9-1) reached its first section championship game since it started playing softball 39 years ago.

Coached by former El Camino and Oregon State pitcher Sharon Props, Del Campo almost forced Woodcreek into an if-necessary game on May 23 before the Timberwolves rallied for three runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh for a 3-2 win.

Even more impressive for Del Campo: The Cougars played most of the season with only nine players.

Then when star Hannah Howell dislocated her shoulder just before the postseason, freshmen twins Shelby and Shyanne Props were elevated to varsity by mom.

They joined senior sister Makayla Props, one of the Cougars' stalwarts.

Props has coached nine seasons at Del Campo, had eight playoff teams and three league champions, but this bunch, which included seniors Morgan Green, Becca Mueller and Jackie Caramazza and junior pitcher Megan Wantz, carved out a special place in her heart.
