Devon Jones to coach Capital Christian boys varsity basketball

Junior varsity boys basketball coach Devon Jones has been elevated to the varsity job at Capital Christian High School.

He replaces Terry Battenberg, who stepped down after leading the Cougars to a 26-6 record and the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V title in his only season with the team.

Former head coach Phil Oates, who assisted Battenberg last season, will return to assist Jones.

Jones inherits a varsity program that had nine undergraduate players this season, and his JV team was 24-4.

"Devon has coached JV basketball here for three years, and we are looking forward to him impacting the lives of our student athletes at the varsity level," said Capital Christian Athletic Director Suzanne Baker in an e-mail.

Baker also announced two other new hires.

Capital Christian graduate Becky (Mogle) Contreras is the new girls volleyball coach and Rene Sanchez takes over the wrestling program.
