Higgwe, Monterey Trail come up short at state in girls 4x100

Despite a valiant try by injured star Esther Higgwe, the Monterey Trail girls 4x100 relay team finished out of the running at tonight's CIF State Track and Field Championship trials in Clovis.

The Mustangs had the 11th fastest time in finishing in 47.95 seconds. The top nine qualified for Saturday's finals.

Higgwe, who injured her right hamstring during last Friday's Sac-Joaquin Section Masters championships and was on crutches all week, ran the anchor leg but clearly was not at her best.

She opted not to run the 100 meters later in the evening.

Monterey Trail finished second in Heat Three to St. Mary's Academy of Inglewood, which ran the second fastest overall time of the night in 46.53. Serra of Gardena, running in Heat Two, had the top time of 46.01.
