Jesuit's Mitsch has huge respect for Grant's Shaq Thompson

Even though Austin Mitsch is one of the Sac-Joaquin Section's top boys sprinters, he still gets a little star-struck.

He's a big Shaq Thompson fan, the Grant football star who Mitsch ran against last season before Thompson decided to switch this spring to baseball.

"He's a great athlete, and a really great guy," Mitsch said. "He came out (May 16) and ran on Grant's relay team. I thought it was cool that he remembered me, and we got to talk some more."

On Friday, the junior won the boys 100 meters and anchored the boys 4x100 relay to victories at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters finals despite battling a groin injury.

Mitsch and his relay mates, Jacy Neczypor, Loren Pilorin (also a 100 qualifier) and Zane Westmoreland, will compete in tonight's trials of the 94th annual CIF State Track and Field Championships at Buchanan High School in Clovis.
