Rosemont's Nia Dorner places second in state track 400 finale

Rosemont's Nia Dorner finished second in tonight's girls 400-meter final at the CIF State Track and Field championships at Buchanan High School in Clovis.

State leader Renetia James, a senior at Serra of Gardena, won in a time of 53.98 seconds.

Dorner, a junior, took second in 55.272, edging Great Oak of Temecula senior Khala Taylor (55.275).

James bettered her season best of 54.26 set during Friday's trials.

Dorner, trying to become the Sac-Joaquin Section's first state girls sprint champion, couldn't match her personal best of 54.81 also set the night before.

Other area results from the early portion of tonight's meet:

• Del Oro's Casey Wheeler placed fifth in the boys 110 hurdles with a time of 14.35. Lloyd Sicard of Serra-Gardena won in 14.09.

• Bear River's Kendal Nielsen placed eighth in the girls long jump with a best of 18 feet, 7.50 inches. The senior also is entered in the triple jump.

• Foothill's Lawre'll Dobbins had a no-height in the girls high jump, missing on all three attempts at 5-3.
