Dakarai Allen of Sheldon High School has given a verbal commitment to San Diego State to play scholarship basketball.
Allen is a 6-foot-6 senior wing with myriad skills: ball handler, floor general, shooter, defender, and he is considered the top recruit in the Sac-Joaquin Section. He averaged 17 points and eight rebounds last season for a Huskies team that won the Delta River League, three-peated as Section Division I champions and won their first NorCal large-school banner.
Allen has maintained that the Aztecs intrigued him throughout the spring and summer, so much so that he cancelled official visits to UCLA, USC, Colorado and Washington State.
Allen said that he quickly admired coach Steve Fisher, who led Michigan to the 1989 NCAA championship and recruited the Fab 5 that included Chris Webber.
Fisher boosted San Diego State in recent years, using Sacramento recruits as playmakers in Chase Tapley of Sacramento High and Xavier Thames of Pleasant Grove.
Allen worked tirelessly over the summer to improve his game, often working out between four to six hours a day.
With the return of other recruits in D'Erryl Williams and Ryan Manning and Franklin transfer Darin Johnson makes Sheldon a state-title contender.
