More football: McClatchy rallies to beat Valley in Metro opener

Kijafa Burgie's third-quarter 58-yard touchdown run and Aldo Alejandrez' extra point kick lifted McClatchy over Valley 7-6 tonight in the Metro Conference opener at Hughes Stadium.

The Lions' score came shortly after Chas Roberts had scored for Valley on a three-yard run. But the Vikings' conversion run failed.

McClatchy is 1-0 in league, 1-3 overall; Valley 0-1 and 0-4 overall.

In other late games:

Ponderosa 60, Natomas 13 in Natomas - Jacob Bist completed 15 of 24 passes for 266 yards and four touchdowns as the Bruins (4-0) defeated the Nighthawks (0-4).

Amador 31, Capital Christian 12 at Capital Christian - Despite two touchdown passes by Matthew Bailey, the Cougars (4-1) suffered their first loss of the season in falling to the visiting Buffaloes (4-0).

Whitney 28, Christian Brothers 10 in Rocklin - The Wildcats (3-1) rushed for 343 yards, with Sutter Choisser going for 154 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries and Kwane Wilkinson adding 130 yards on 22 carries in beating the Falcons (3-2). JR Robinson highlighted Whitney's defense by intercepting a pass, recovering a fumble and making four tackles.

No. 18 Monterey Trail 12, Rodriguez 7 in Fairfield - Donovan Robinson scored on runs of 10 and 34 yards to lead the Mustangs (3-1) past their hosts.

Sheldon 27, Laguna Creek 21 at Sheldon - Although the Huskies (3-2) prevailed over the Cardinals (2-2), Laguna Creek's Cecil Williams threw for 158 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 95 yards and a score. Five of Williams' completions went to Denzel Johnson for 110 yards and a touchdown.

Bear River 28, River Valley 14 in Yuba City - Cody Heard rushed for three touchdowns and Austin Dowling had a 21-yard touchdown reception and two interceptions to lead the Bruins (4-0) pas the Falcons. T.J. Dove rushed for 129 yards and a touchdown and also returned a punt 53 yards for a touchdown for River Valley.
