The Sacramento Bee's weekly Top 20 high school football rankings has a new top dog in Franklin. The Wildcats of Elk Grove beat previous No. 1 Elk Grove 17-7 in a Delta Valley Conference showdown that was deemed one of the top games nationally by MaxPreps.
For more on that game, read this story.
Elk Grove slips to No. 3, considering the opponent it lost to. Elk Grove had its 17-game regular-season winning streak halted. The Thundering Herd played without second-year starting quarterback Tommy Arnold, who sat due to his role in a fight over his stolen cell phone. Arnold said later that he will learn from this and vows a strong comeback.
Placer slipped a spot to No. 6 after slugging past Lincoln 10-7. The Hillmen are the first to tell you that they can play better and must play better with longtime rival Colfax looming this week and upstart No. 15 Center in Week 10 for what should be for the Pioneer Valley League championship.
Granite Bay inched up a spot to No. 5, having won its fourth consecutive game, beating rival Del Oro 21-7 and moving closer to a Sierra Foothill League championship. Granite Bay was coming off a double overtime win over then-No. 10 Rocklin.
Center moves up to No. 15 after its impressive 36-0 rout of 6-1 Bear River, which was coming off a 14-7 loss at Placer. Center has lost only to Chico of the North Section, which pushed then-No. 2 Nevada Union to the brink in Week 2.
Center beat Rio Linda, which beat Antelope, to help understand the rankings log jam. Vista del Lago returns to the Top 20 at No. 16 after beating then No. 11 Cosumnes Oaks 35-34 behind quarterback Matt Jimison (355 yards, four touchdowns). This was for the Sierra Valley Conference title.
In tomorrow's Bee, we detail Vista's surge and have news and notes on Antelope, Placer, Folsom and Sutter of the North Section. Another story we are tracking: The status of Nevada Union linebacker Cole Hannum, a transfer from Marysville who was deemed ineligible by the Sac-Joaquin Section. The Section ruled that Hannum, a senior, had prior contact with the Nevada Union coaching staff and followed a coach to the program.
NU has appealed the decision. NU athletic director Steve Pilcher said a CIFcommitte has 15 days to respond to the appeal, the last day being Friday. That's the same day NU plays at Del Oro in a critical SFL contest.
