Last-place Roseville upsets five-time defending league champs

It's been a tough year for Roseville boys soccer and veteran coach Pablo Gutierrez.

The Tigers entered the week 2-12 and 0-5 in the Sierra Foothill League. The Tigers had lost seven matches by one goal.

But Roseville produced perhaps the biggest area upset of the season on Tuesday in beating Granite Bay 1-0 behind Alex Roper's goal.

It was first place Granite Bay's first loss in league as the Grizzlies seek their sixth consecutive league banner.

Granite Bay (13-3-1) is ranked No. 4 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Region VIII rankings, which includes schools from Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Idaho as well as Northern California.

Roseville resumes league play tonight at Woodcreek.
