Behind Browning, Folsom beats Vacaville in D-II football playoffs

It was miserable in every regard in the second half Saturday night.

Sideways rain from the wind soacked Folsom's home field. Moisture bounced off helmets, fans and the rubberized track. Miserable except for the Folsom Bulldogs, who again proved to be a machine in all conditions, belting Vacaville 49-13 in a Sac-Joaquin Section Division II quarterfinal game to move to 12-0 for the first time since 1990 when that group went 13-0.

Jake Browning passed for 380 yards and five touchdowns, and the defense was superb in denying the Bulldogs of Solano County much running room in avenging the D-II title loss last season. In 2010, Folsom blasted Vacaville 75-6 en route to a CIF State Division II championship.

Browning, just a sophomore, hit Troy Knox for scoring tosses of 19 and 13 yards and Josiah Deguara for 17 yards in the first half. In the second half, Browning found Trace Noble for touchdowns of 35 and 20 yards.

All told, Browning has passed for 4,527 yards and 55 touchdowns this season. Poised, accurate and mature beyond his years, Browning credits his offensive line, a unit that includes the personable Josh Wormley, who goes by "The Big Lovely" and runners Bailey Laolagi and Harry Lipnosky for his success. He was not intercepted against Vacaville. Folsom coaches Kris Richardson and Troy Taylor have raved about the growth of their young team.

The Folsom defense was anchored by defensive lineman Quincy Capel, linebackers Derek Stiles and Bailey Laolagi and defensive back Phillip Carter. The unit is coached by Lou Biaz, the longtime Sacramento State coach.

Folsom next plays host to Buhach Colony of Atwater, a run-dominant team that beat Antelope in another quarterfinal.
