Two former Ponderosa post players, Steve Lackey and Brad Waldow, could be matched up against one another on Saturday night when St. Mary's College plays host to Sonoma State in a men's basketball season opener.
The 6-foot-7, 205-pound Lackey is a senior forward-center who sat out last season while recovering from a knee injury. He averaged 2.7 points and 2.1 rebounds as a sophomore.
The 6-9, 260-pound Waldow, a sophomore center, made the West Coast Conference All-Freshman Team last season. He started 24 games and averaged 8.1 points and 4.4 rebounds.
Lackey (Class of 2009) and Waldow (Class of 2010) were members of then coach Dave Millhollin's back-to-back Sierra Valley Conference championship teams in 2008 and 2009.
Lackey set a school record for field goal percentage of 67 percent his senior year, which Waldow broke the next season (72 percent).
St. Mary's went 27-6 last season. Division II Sonoma State was 17-11.
Former Christian Brothers standout Sterling Arterberry (9.8 points, 4.9 rebounds) also plays for Sonoma State.
