This giant killer role seems to work just fine for Sacramento State.
The Hornets beat longtime NCAA big name Utah of the Pacific 12 Conference 74-71 on Friday night at the Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, rallying from 13 down in the final 12 minutes to move to 3-0.
Dylan Garrity, a sophomore guard, had 19 points and five assists and his jumper put his Hornets ahead with 1:29 to play.
Sac State hasn't been 3-0 since the 1999-2000 season. John Dickson, a senior, had 16 points for Sac State, which beat Oregon State in 2009 under coach Brian Katz, who has indicated that this could be his best team. Joe Eberhard had 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Hornets.
Sac State opened with a 96-62 win over UC Merced and followed with an 85-67 effort over Cal State Bakersfield.
Utah, certainly, provided the highest level of competition.
"Our goals are simple," Katz told reporters Friday night. "One, we want to get better every day. Two, we want to win our next game. Three, we want to have more fun than any team in the country.
"And I tell my guys, we aren't going to have any fun if we don't do No. 1 and No. 2."
