Sheldon's Merker threw for 507 yards in loss to Ponderosa

It was a tough season for Sheldon's football team.

Under interim coach Herbie Berry, the Huskies lost their last five games, all in the Delta River League, to finish 3-7 overall.

But behind quarterback Nolan Merker and wide receivers Taron Johnson and DeVionn Holmes, Sheldon didn't go down without a fight in its season finale against visiting Ponderosa last Friday.

Before falling 49-46, Merker completed 32 of 59 passes for 507 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions and rushed for a score; Johnson had six catches for 127 yards and three touchdowns and Holmes had six catches for 133 yards.

Merker and Johnson are juniors; Holmes a senior.

Former Folsom quarterback Tanner Trosin, now at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, holds the section and Northern California records.

He passed for 601 yards in a 49-46 win over Deer Valley of Antioch last season.
