Boys roundup: Pope scores 35 in Laguna Creek's win tonight

Malik Pope scored 35 points to lead Laguna Creek to an 80-66 win over St. Mary's of Stockton in a nonleague game tonight in Elk Grove.

It was the Burbank transfer's second 30-points-plus performance. The 6-foot-8 junior wing had 33 points, 12 rebounds and four assists in a 76-59 win over Woodcreek on Friday.

The two performances come after Pope, considered the top junior prospect in Northern California, was held to nine points in a 62-55 loss to Del Oro in the season opener six days ago

In other boys games of note tonight:

• Brandon Strong led four players in double figures with 29 points as Davis defeated Natomas 108-69. For the Blue Devils (4-1), who run an up-tempo Grinnell College-type offense, it was their second 100-plus-points win. Their only loss came 101-95 to Bella Vista on Friday in Bella Vista's tournament.

• Sophomore Isaiah Bailey had 22 points and Lake Lutes 15 as Jesuit held off surprising Hiram Johnson 63-59.

• Unbeaten McClatchy, fresh off winning Saturday's Bill Cartwright Classic at Elk Grove High School, defeated Vacaville 55-43 behind Aaron Harmetz' 20 points.

• Despite 28 points by Anthony Williams, Foothill fell 65-62 to Oakmont.

• Averaging 31 points entering the game, Justin Beskeen had a game-high 22 points in leading unbeaten Bear River (4-0) past San Juan 51-47.
