Pleasant Grove to play West of Tracy for Macres title tonight

Defending champion Pleasant Grove will play West of Tracy 6:45 p.m. today for the championship of the sixth annual Mark Macres Memorial Boys Basketball Tournament at Monterey Trail High School.

Pleasant Grove advanced to the title game by beating Granite Bay 83-59 in Friday's semifinals. Malik Thames had 32 points and Matthew Hayes added 23 to lead the Eagles.

West defeated Foothill 67-61 in the other winners' bracket semifinal.

Granite Bay will play Foothill for third place at 5 p.m. Campolindo of Moraga plays Monterey Trail at 3:30 for the consolation title. The Reno vs. Christian Brothers seventh place game is now under way.

The tournament, put on by Monterey Trail coach Ken Manfredi, is named in honor of Mark Macres, who served the Elk Grove Unified School District for 17 years, first, as a teacher and vice principal at Florin High School, then as a founding vice principal of Monterey Trail.

Macres, who died in 2007, was a strong supporter of athletics at Monterey Trail.
