Battenberg keeps watchful eye on his old team, from afar

Terry Battenberg is keeping an eye on the playoff run of his former Capital Christian boys basketball team, but he's doing it from thousands of miles away.

Battenberg, who led Capital Christian to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V title last season before stepping down, is on a tour of Australia and New Zealand.

He's doing 13 coaching clinics during a month-long stay, his third trip to Down Under.

The veteran coach had to smile at one promotional flier, which listed him as a "renowned international coach and clinician."

"Just shows that you are 'bigger' when you are from another country," Battenberg said in an e-mail.

No. 2 seeded Capital Christian, now coached by Devon Jones, is playing No. 3 Ripon Christian in Wednesday's 7:30 p.m. boys section semifinal at Galt High School.
